rem HELLO! WELCOME TO EMPIRE
rem
rem Imagine yourself to be the ruler of a small, unimportant
rem piece of European land way back in the medieval ages. Your
rem country is beset by many problems - no industry, little
rem trade, small army, underpopulation, angry neighbors, plague,
rem and all the other day-to-day problems a capable leader must
rem learn to face. Ambitious by necessity, you must acquire
rem land, capital, and an army just to survive. Because of the
rem short lifetimes back then, you'll have only a limited amount
rem of time to build your country into an empire.
pause
rem Competent rule will gradually be rewarded with lofty
rem titles - Knight, Prince, King, and finally -- Emperor --
rem Sounds easy? Then consider this - five other city-
rem states are also struggling to become the emperor, and they
rem don't just intend to passively watch you win. They control
rem armies which can attack at a moment's notice, and perhaps
rem devastate your country. They control the grain market, and
rem if you think OPEC is bad, just wait to see how scarce and
rem expensive can become.
pause
rem Of course, a competent ruler could make a killing on the
rem grain market. With proper planning, your harvests should be
rem plentiful. You could solve overpopulation problems by
rem raising a large army to be killed off in battle.
rem Nevertheless, your overriding concern should be
rem lebensraum - or living room. There is only a limited amount
rem of land to be conquered. If you can defeat the barbarian
rem hordes, and the well-trained standing armies of the other
rem mations, and then defeat their peasant militias, perhaps you
rem may attain the well deserved title of Emperor.
pause
rem TAXES: The CUSTOMS TAX applies only to immigrants to
rem your nation. Often, lower customs tax means more immigrants.
rem The SALES TAX is closely intertwined into your
rem capitalist economy. While it has the potential of raising
rem lots of money, overly high taxes tend to stifle industrial
rem profits.
rem INCOME TAXES are paid by all inhabitants and industry.
rem Again, lower income taxes often mean increased industrial
rem output.
pause
rem You have the option each year to invest your earnings in
rem different types of trade and industry. In the years to
rem follow, these investments, if managed correctly, will more
rem than pay for themselves.
rem TYPES OF INVESTMENTS: MARKETPLACES are a relatively
rem cheap investment that are
rem quite profitable because they encourage the formation of
rem middle class - the merchants. And, as you are probably
rem aware, the middle class pays an inordinate share of taxes.
rem GRAIN MILLS are necessary to process the harvest, and
rem consequently, usually do quite well when there is a large
rem harvest.
pause
rem FOUNDRIES are necessary for the creation of large
rem armies. Several of them will allow you to equip a much
rem larger army than otherwise.
rem SHIPYARDS have the greatest profit potential of all
rem investments. Because of a larger volume of orders during
rem good weather, there is often a better return during these
rem years.
pause
rem ARMIES are never a profitable investment. Besides
rem costing a large initial investment, they also cost alot to
rem maintain and train. In addition, they also require a greater
rem fraction of the harvest than the serfs.
rem Of course, one should give himself the luxury of
rem building a PALACE. What else could distinguish an emperor
rem from all the other kings with their castles, than a palace?
rem Also, with a palace, your country will begin to attract more
rem nobles ---which will allow larger armies...etc.
pause
rem OTHER GENERAL HINTS:
rem You always lose 10% as a brokerage feef when dealing on
rem the grain market. When you sell your grain at different
rem prices, the market price is the weighted average of the sales
rem prices (this helps to prevent large yearly price
rem fluctuations). To prevent those unscrupulous rulers who try
pause to use the market as a method to avoid rats, you can't buy
rem back your own grain. Also, leave a portion of your grain
rem reserve for planting next year's harvest.
rem Often, it is beneficial to feed your people much more
rem than they require. Immigrants are usually attracted to a
rem prosperous nation, and sometimes, even merchants and nobles
rem move in.
pause
rem Up to six people can play this game. Rulers not played
rem by humans, will be played by your computer with its playing
rem ability based on the average of the human players.
pause
rem WINNING: To become a PRINCE, you must pass these rather
rem stringent qualifications:
rem 8 Marketplaces
rem 4 Mills
rem Palace 20% completed
rem A land-over-serf ratio of 4.8
rem More than 10 Nobles
rem and over 2300 serfs
pause
rem To become a KING, you must have:
rem 14 Marketplaces
rem 6 Mills
rem Palace 60% completed
rem 1 Foundry
rem A land-over-serf ratio of 5.0 or more
rem 25 Nobles
rem More than 2600 serfs
pause
rem To become Emperor, you must have:
rem All of the King's requirements plus:
rem 40 Nobles
rem More than 3100 serfs.
rem
rem This game originally appeared on a CLOAD monthly
rem magazine (on cassette) for a TRS-80 Computer in the late
rem 1970's. I have converted it over to GWBASIC on an AT&T 6300.
rem It will also run on any IBM compatible with GWBASIC....It has
rem not been tried on BASICA as yet. It should also be noted
rem that the clock on the AT&T 6300 is much faster than an IBM,
rem so if you attempt it on an IBM, and the response times don't
pause seem quick enough, you can adjust them in the following
rem subroutines: 59, and 601. You can print this out with your
rem word-processor or the Ctl-PrtScr function.
rem
rem If you have any comments or suggestions or improvements
rem to the game, please forward them to me. Or just tell me if
rem you liked it. Remember, I did not write the game...only
rem enjoyed it once and had to convert it over to modern day
rem equipment. Beware...it is addicting.
rem Feel free to share it with anyone you choose. Good luck
rem with your Empire.
